Education for a Rising Bay Area — A Spatial Study of Education through the Development Story of the Greater Bay AreaUsing an education journey as a narrative thread to present spatial relationships among school siting, educational resources, and regional development.
Overview
The project explores education development in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area. It uses Ma Huateng's journey from primary school through university as a narrative thread for examining how educational facilities changed alongside urbanization and economic growth. The story-map proposal combines biography, regional development, and school-siting analysis to discuss educational-resource distribution, student travel, school-district housing, and the spatial relationship between universities and enterprises. The project was submitted to the Story Map track of the 2024 ESRI Cup China College Student GIS Software Development Competition. Design and analysis
The proposal uses a Sidecar story-map structure to organize content into primary and middle school, high school, and university stages. School locations are overlaid with terrain, transport, population density, commercial areas, and residential areas to compare siting patterns across education levels. The university chapter discusses relationships among higher-education distribution, enterprise locations, talent development, and the regional economy, and develops siting recommendations for educational-resource allocation and urban planning. The project completed the design and production of the story map, presenting a visual narrative of educational development through a web-based interactive experience. |
